ISU and Entomology alum Carol Fassbinder-Orth was featured in the August 28 issue of The ISU Alumni Association News Flash.
Carol enrolled as an ISU Entomology undergrad in 1999. She worked with Dr. Joel Coats for two years evaluating natural products (thymol, etc.) for the control Varroa mites, a pest of honey bees. Carol’s research resulted in three publications: J. Apiculture Research (she was the first undergrad ever to serve as first author of an article in that journal), an American Bee Journal article (trade magazine), and a honey beekeeping conference proceedings. Carol’s research received the Best Poster Award for an Undergraduate at the North Central Branch of the Entomological Society of America meeting in Minneapolis, Spring, 2000.
Carol graduated from ISU in Genetics in 2003 and earned her Ph.D. in environmental toxicology from the University of Wisconsin in 2008. She is an Associate Professor of Virology and Disease Ecology at Creighton University. And still an avid beekeeper!
