Classification:
There are three major classification schemes that have been applied to the true crane flies, these being Tipulidae (sensu lato), Tipulomorpha, and Tipuloidea. The differences between theses schemes is minimal and largely deals with the rank given to each recognized taxonomic unit. Tipulidae (s.l.) and Tipuloidea have essentially the same meaning, with the divisions under Tipulidae (s.l.) raised from subfamiliar ranking to full family ranking under Tipuloiea. The classification of Tipulomorpha is based on a higher level classification that additionally includes Trichoceridae as a sister-group to the Tipulidae (s.l.), however the taxonomy of the crane flies under this classification is that of Tipulidae (s.l.).
