Welcome to the Smith Lab at Iowa State University!

Our research interests are broadly focused on the study of the innate immune system and how mosquito immunity influences vector competence and pathogen transmission.

We are currently investigating how malaria parasite survival and transmission are influenced by mosquito immunity. With an ultimate goal to reduce the heavy burden of malaria, our lab uses an interdisciplinary approach to better understand the host-pathogen interactions between the malaria parasite and the mosquito host. We are also interested in extending our knowledge into other mosquito species and arbopathogen models.

In addition, we lead mosquito surveillance efforts in the state of Iowa, looking to better understand WNV transmission and the introduction of invasive mosquito species.
