Celebrating 25 years at ISU - Mark Gleason and John VanDyk

The Entomology and PLPM departments are proud to celebrate Mark Gleason (PLPM) and John VanDyk (ENT) for their 25 years of service at Iowa State University. Mark and John join 66 other faculty and staff who hit the 25 year mark in 2021 and are invited to the 25 Year Club gathering and dinner next week. Thanks and congratulations to Mark and John for their contributions!

Gassmann honored as one of six Iowa State researchers for distinguished work

Gassmann’s research focuses on interactions between crop plants and insect pests, and approaches for improving agricultural sustainability. In particular, he is interested in factors affecting the evolution of resistance by insect pests to genetically engineered crops that produce insecticidal proteins derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), and ways in which agricultural systems can be managed to delay Bt resistance. Jim Oleson Scholarship in Entomology

The Jim Oleson Scholarship in Entomology provides scholarships for one undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Insect Science or Entomology per year. Scholarships are for one year but may be renewed for additional years. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic promise and initiative and hence a minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required. Recent past award recipients were Teresa Blader in 2016, Edmund Norris in 2017, and Ashley St. Clair in both 2018 & 2019.

Coats Awarded Distinguished Title

Joel Coats, Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Entomology, in the Department of Entomology at ISU recently was conferred with the title of Fellow of the American Chemical Society. He was presented with the honor in a ceremony at the National ACS Meeting in San Diego this Fall.

Ginny Mitchell has been selected as the 2018 Recipient of the Friend of Science (FOS) Award

Ginny Mitchell has been selected as the 2018 Recipient of the Friend of Science (FOS) Award presented by the Iowa Science Teachers Section (ISTS) of the Iowa Academy of Science (IAS). The Friend of Science Award recognizes those within the state who has made significant contributions to ISTS and/or to Science Education at the local, regional or statewide level. She will be recognized on Monday, October 8th at their 2018 Fall Conference.

Rogers and Smith selected for High Impact Award

Linnaean Games Team 2018Iowa State had a very strong presence at this year’s North Central Branch-Entomological Society of America meeting. A group of 15 entomology students attended the 2018 NCB-ENT meeting in Wisconsin this past week.

Ge Zhang and Teresa Blader each placed third in their respective highly-competitive student competitions at the Entomological Society of America - North Central Branch meeting held in Indianapolis, IN, June 4-6, 2017.
Teresa Blader and Erika Rodbell co-presented a paper at the Entomological Society of America - North Central Branch meetings held recently in Indianapolis, IN. 
Erika Rodbell and Teresa Blader competed in the Triplehorn Pinning Challenge.
