ISU Entomology VEISHEA Events
Are you ready for a bugtastic time at VEISHEA? The Iowa State University Entomology department's Insect Zoo and Entomology Graduate Student Organization are hosting the Bug Village in the Science II building. You can find EGSO on the first floor with the pollination station where you can learn about our important pollinators and even make a backyard native bee habitat to take home! Try your hand at the ladybug bag toss and have your photo taken as an ear of corn or a moth!
Venture up to the 4th floor and enter the wondrous world of arthropods. Visit the display room and step into a land of multi-legged critters. See a Goliath Birdeater, the beautiful Indian Ornamental and the Skeleton-legged Tarantulas. You will gain another perspective of cockroaches when you see the brilliant colors of the Domino and the Glowspot roaches. Be amazed at the size and color of the Eastern Lubber Grasshoppers -- do you think they can fly?? These are just a few of the creatures displayed by the Insect Zoo.
Walk down the hall and learn about flies! I know what you are thinking: GROSS! At the maggot station you will learn about the fly life cycle and the impact flies have on humans and other animals. You will then be given a cup of paint-covered maggots and paper to make your very own maggot art! How fun, right!?!
You can also test your insect anatomy and build-a-bug. Can you make an insect with the right number of body parts, how about legs? How many antennae do they have? Spring is here and we will soon be seeing butterflies, well we hope! Make your own yarn butterfly or moth to take home.
We are not done yet! Don't forget about the hands-on table. Here you will get up close and personal with Madagascar hissing cockroaches, walking sticks, millipedes, beetles, mealworms, and a whip scorpion! See the glowing Emperor Scorpion, why do they do that? Are you brave enough to touch a tarantula?
Wanna roach race? We will be running roach races every half hour beginning at 9 am, with the last roaches running at 4:30. Lets see if Roachy Balboa can beat Roachtastic this year. In between the roach races we will be doing roach pulls! See the amazing Madagascar Hissing roaches pull up to 68 times it's own weight!! Could you pull that much?
If you fell in love with some of the arthropods (it is easy to do!) how about taking one home? We will be selling Chilean Rosehair spiderlings in terrariums for $30.00 as well as male Madagascar hissing cockroaches in terrariums for $20.00. Quantities are limited so get to the Science II building early to get yours!
So don't be a bed-bug; crawl, fly, or slither your way over to the Science II building for our VEISHEA celebration! Everyone is welcome.
