Summary

Paired-choice tests were conducted using Spodoptera littoralis and Rhopalosiphum padi as prey for Chrysoperla carnea larvae. In the tests, the C. carnea larvae were given a choice between prey that had fed on transgenic corn (Bt+) and prey that had not (Bt-). Neither prey species was lethally affected by Bt. C. carnea showed a statistically significant preference for S. littoralis fed Bt- corn as 3rd instars. They had no preference between R. padi. The authors state that the lack of preference for a treatment of R. padi may be due to the absence of the Bt protein in the phloem.

Comments

Preference for Bt- S. littoralis may not show ability to detect Bt, but rather a preference for a non-impaired prey source. There is potential that Bt-fed S. littoralis were a less healthy food source.
