Although the soybean looper larva, Pseudoplusia includens, is similar in color to the green cloverworm, Hypena scabra, it is characterized by having two pair of abdominal prolegs (on segments 5 and 6) and a pair of prolegs at the end of the body (on segment 10). Because of the arrangement of the legs on the body, the insect compresses its body, or loops, as it walks. In addition to the number of prolegs, this caterpillar distinctive white stripes down its sides.
