Aphids in soybeans are usually identified as being small (less than 1 mm) and either with or without wings. Their most distinguishing characteristic are the cornicles; the "tail pipes" projecting from the rear of the abdomen.
Pea aphid: The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, is common on alfalfa in Iowa where forms large colonies. Colonies of this aphid do not occur on soybean because it is not an acceptable host for this pest species. (Photo Marlin E. Rice)
