The scenic Alaska Highway links Alaska with Canada and the contiguous United States. It is fully paved with year-round services. There are lots of motels, diners, and campgrounds along the way. Road mileage to Anchorage: From Seattle 2,435 miles (3,896 km) (about 5 days to travel); From Los Angeles 3,712 miles (5,939 km); From New York City 4,649 miles (7,438 km); From Miami 5,434 miles (8,694 km.) Several cruise lines offer excursions May through September, docking in nearby Whittier, Seward, Homer and even Anchorage. Port cities are connected to Anchorage by road, air or rail. Cruise lines serving Alaska include Carnival Cruise Lines, Cruise West, Holland America , Princess Cruises and Tours , Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean. Daily rail service is available from Anchorage to Whittier, Seward, Talkeetna, Denali and Fairbanks. You can bring your car, recreational vehicle, or boat to Alaska on the Alaska Marine Highway. They offer regularly scheduled ferry service for 33 communities in Alaska, plus Bellingham, WA, and Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The closest drop off point to Anchorage is in Whittier, AK (about 40 minutes drive to Anchorage; but there is also railroad service from Whittier to Anchorage). The Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau has a website on getting to or around Alaska. Ground Transportation from AirportThe Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is only about 5 miles from the University. Transportation to UAA is most convenient by taxicab (about $10-15 US) or shuttle service. Hotels will provide free shuttles from the airport. Getting Around AnchorageLike any metropolitan city, there are many transportation options within Anchorage, including taxicabs and limousines, rental cars, RVs, bicycles, motorcycles, motorcoach charters, and public bus service. The Ship Creek Shuttle connects key downtown Anchorage locations with the Ship Creek area, including stops at the Alaska Railroad Depot. The bus service operates 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, year-round. Saturday service, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Public Bus Transportation Automobiles are available through several car rental agencies.
