Awards and Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

The following scholarships are available to undergraduate students at Iowa State University. They are listed here by funding source.

DEPARTMENT OF ENTOMOLOGY

Scholarships for entering freshmen are offered on a funds-available basis:

Entomology Alumni Scholarship

The Entomology Alumni Scholarship provides scholarships of $1,000 for one incoming undergraduate student in Entomology per year. The scholarships are open to both incoming freshmen and transfer students who plan to major in entomology. Selection is based on scholarship, leadership potential, extracurricular activities, work and community experience, and on promise for a career in Entomology. The Student Awards and Scholarships Committee will select awardees.

Applicants should send a cover letter describing their career goals, and a résumé including information on academic training (including GPA, ACT/SAT score), activities and leadership information, and work experience.

Wayne A. Rowley Scholarship

The Wayne A Rowley Scholarship in Entomology provides scholarships of $2,000 for one undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Entomology per year. The scholarships are open to students with Sophomore or higher class standing. Scholarships are for one year, but may be renewed for up to three additional years. First preference shall be to applicants concentrating on medical entomology. The Student Awards and Scholarships Committee will recommend awardees to the Chair of the Department of Entomology.

Applicants should send a cover letter describing their career goals, and a résumé including information on academic training (including GPA, ACT/SAT score), activities and leadership information, and work experience. Entomology Student Scholarship for Student Excellence


The Entomology Student Scholarship for Student Excellence, which is funded by the Fred Clute Memorial Fund, provides a scholarship of $500 for one undergraduate or graduate student per year, with preference for students working in Structural Pest Management. Selection at the undergraduate level is based on academic excellence, and at the graduate level on excellence in research, teaching and / or extension.

Fred N. Clute (1932 – 2002) worked for Evans Orchard Supply Company in Kansas City before joining Rhodes Chemical Company in 1966. He spent most of his 36 years with Rhodes educating, training, providing customer service and support, and solving problems. His greatest satisfaction was in sharing his experience, knowledge and wisdom with others. Fred received many awards from the state pest control associations throughout the Midwest, and attended the Purdue Pest Control Conference no fewer than eighteen times.

Eligibility: Students majoring in the Department of Entomology may apply during the year of their graduation (prior to graduation), or the year before expected graduation. A student may only receive the award once.

Applications from undergraduate students should include

1. A nomination letter from a faculty member within the Department of Entomology
2. Curriculum vitae including GPA (which should be 3.0 or higher)

Applications from graduate students should include

1. Curriculum vitae
2. A description of activities contributing to student excellence in research, teaching, or extension (one page maximum).
3. Supplementary material in support of the application. For example, published or in press research articles (research category), examples of teaching materials, student evaluations (teaching category), or extension publications (extension category).
4. A letter from the student’s major professor in support of the application including expected graduation date, and appraisal of student activities in the specified area. The major professor should specifically address the productivity of the student and the impact of the activity.

Applications should be sent to Dr. Bryony Bonning, Chair, Student Awards and Scholarships Committee, by e-mail bbonning@iastate.edu. Applications must be received by November 1. The Student Awards and Scholarships Committee will recommend awardees to the department Chair. The awardee will be announced at the Entomology Department Holiday Party in December.

ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA

ESA Undergraduate Scholarship/BioQuip


BioQuip sponsors a $2,000 scholarship, and The Entomological Foundation sponsors several $1,500 scholarships to undergraduate students. The scholarships are designed to encourage student interest in Entomology. Applications due July 1.

Stanley Beck Fellowship


Annual fellowship of $4,000 to assist needy students at graduate and undergraduate level. Need may be based on physical limitations, or economic, minority or environmental conditions.
