The Medical Entomology Laboratory at Iowa State University built an internationally recognized mosquito/mosquito-borne disease surveillance program for the state of Iowa, under the auspices of Dr. Wayne Rowley. The mosquito surveillance program has been in place for more than 35 years, and provides public health officials and the general public with information about mosquito populations and the potential for those mosquitoes to transmit disease agents.

The Medical Entomology Laboratory also conducts a Lyme Disease Surveillance Program has been in place since 1990. This program relies on citizens to send in tick specimens so that we can track the distribution and infection status of Iowa ticks.
