Mosquito-Borne Disease Surveillance 2006

During the summer months, the ISU Medical Entomology Research Laboratory, in a cooperative project with the Iowa Department of Public Health and the University Hygienic Lab (Iowa City, IA), monitors mosquito populations and mosquito-borne disease in the State of Iowa.

As of the 17th of February, 2007, 37 cases of WNV-associated disease were reported in Iowa. In addition to WNV, a sentinel chicken tested positive for Saint Louis Encephalitis virus in Story County, and a human case of LaCrosse Encephalitis virus was reported in Clayton County.

 

West Nile virus positive samples included mosquitoes (Dubuque, Polk (x2), Pottawattamie (x3), Scott (x6), Story (x2), and Woodbury counties), sentinel chickens (Black Hawk (x2), Cerro Gordo (x3), Dubuque, Linn, Ringgold (x2), Scott (x2), and Woodbury (x7) counties), wild birds (Blackhawk, Benton, Bremer, Buchanan, Chicksaw, Clay, Clinton, Crawford, Delaware, Dubuque, Grundy, Johnson, Hamilton, Linn, Lyon, Plymouth, Pocahontas, Pottawattamie (x2), Sac, Sioux, Story, Warren, and Woodbury (x3) counties), horses (Buena Vista, Cerro Gordo, Davis, Jackson, Mitchell, Osceola, Washington (x3), Winneshiek, and Woodbury (x2) counties), blood donations (Black Hawk (x2), Clinton (x2), Dubuque, Keokuk, Scott, Washington, Winnebago, and Woodbury counties) and samples from people suffering from West Nile-caused illness (Adair, Black Hawk, Cass, Carroll, Cerro Gordo, Dickinson (x2), Emmett (x3), Franklin, Hardin, Harrison, Henry, Jackson, Kossuth, Lee, Marion (x2), Marshall, O'Brien, Polk, Plymouth (x3), Pottawattamie (x3), Ringgold, Shelby, Sioux, Wapello (x2), Washington, and Woodbury (x3) Counties). Confirmatory testing for many of these samples was performed by the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory. For more information on how our program is run, please follow this LINK.
