What's new: Mosquito-L was mentioned in Parasitology Today, March 1999 (p.92)! (OK, this is not so new anymore.)
This electronic mailing list is provided for the discussion of topics related to mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae). The goal is to support open communication among persons interested in mosquitoes by providing an easily accessible means of information exchange. Anyone with internet access can subscribe.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
| ![]() |
The number and kinds of topics are largely be determined by the list's subscribers.
The list owner of Mosquito-L is John VanDyk of Iowa State University. This is a moderated list to protect subscribers from unwanted messages and advertising.
If you go on vacation and set your e-mail to autoreply with a message like "I'm on vacation until May 5, please contact Betty if you need assistance," you will be unsubscribed from Mosquito-L. If you think about it for a minute you'll see why.
Never enter the mosquito-l mailing list address in a web form to "send this article to a friend." This is usually a method of collecting e-mail addresses to send unsolicited e-mail later on. Since Mosquito-L is moderated, it means more work for the moderator. Instead, compose your own message to Mosquito-L and simply include the URL of the page you are recommending.
Some pictures of mosquitoes of the midwestern United States are available from Iowa State's Entomology Image Gallery.
Send an e-mail message to MOSQUITO-L-REQUEST@IASTATE.EDU with the word SUBSCRIBE in the body of the message. The subject field will be ignored. If your e-mail program automatically adds your signature to the end of your message, put the word END on a separate line after the word SUBSCRIBE. Here's an example of how to subscribe:

Basically, the heart of an electronic mailing list is a computer that knows who is on the list. When the computer receives a message, it sends the message to everyone on the list. For example, a message sent to the address
will be sent to everyone who is currently subscribed to the Mosquito-L mailing list.
There are no charges associated with Mosquito-L. Subscribing to Mosquito-L simply puts your name on the list of people who will receive messages sent to the list.
No. Mosquito-L, mosquito-l and MOSQUITO-L all look the same to the computer.
Once you are subscribed to Mosquito-L, sending a message to
will send your message to all the subscribers on Mosquito-L.
Instead, post the file somewhere on the internet and include a URL in your message.
Not at the moment, though we hope to provide this feature in the future.
If your SUBSCRIBE message to Mosquito-L-request@iastate.edu is returned, check to make sure that you have the address spelled right. If it is spelled right, wait a day or so and try again -- it is possible that we might be experiencing network problems. If, after repeated attempts, you cannot subscribe, send e-mail to John VanDyk and we will try to solve the problem.
Mosquito-L is also available in digest form. To subscribe to the digest version, send a message to MOSQUITO-L-DIGEST-REQUEST@IASTATE.EDU with the word SUBSCRIBE in the body of the message. The subject field will be ignored. If your e-mail program automatically adds your signature to the end of your message, put the word END on a separate line after the word SUBSCRIBE. Digests are sent infrequently since Mosquito-L is a rather low-traffic list. I recommend subscribing to the regular version.
Not at this point. Tom Floore has put together some good information on the American Mosquito Control Association's site, and you can always check Wikipedia.
