Distance education- behind the scene
*B. Mills, Communications and Information Technology, University of NE, Lincoln, NE 68583
The onslaught of distance education programs and courses across the country have required many faculty members to develop multimedia applications for on-line or satellite classes. Occasionally, a lack of funding, lack of skills or indifference could affect student learning experiences negatively. Basic preparation, awareness of current technology, and application of fundamental multimedia guidelines will ensure that teaching and learning goals are met. Preparation to deliver courses via distance should begin well before the class start. This preparation should include goal-oriented meetings with the producer, and/or instructional designer, and any marketing staff to determine the needs and goals of each course. This pro-active approach to the design of classes being delivered via distance fosters trust and teamwork between the instructor and producer and enables faculty members to use the available technology to its fullest.
