Internet tools to support distance education
*I. MacRae, Department of Entomology, University of MN- NW Experiment Station, Crookston, MN 56716
Digital communication techniques offer powerful and flexible tools to support distance education efforts. Internet software such as the World Wide Web, video conferencing, and restricted networking can supplement and sometimes replace other communication techniques. WWW sites supporting classes can be used to provide student-instructor contact, additional material, course notes, and even examination. Video conferencing can be used to augment traditional lectures or ITV transmissions. Restricted networking can often supply materials with greater security, increase transfer rates, and allow real-time video transmission. Some of these tools will be presented and discussed.
