Many commercial insect fumigants have been banned or are being restricted in their uses. Alternative fumigants need to be developed that are efficacious, biodegradable, and economical. Three classes of natural insect fumigants will be discussed: glucosinolate aglucones, monoterpenoids, and cyanohydrins. Fumigation data will be presented for these classes of compounds against the lesser grain borer and the house fly. Synthetic derivatives and analogs will also be discussed. Hopefully biorational alternative fumigants will be more environmentally friendly.
