The National Research Initiative is USDA's competitive grants program and accepts agriculturally-related proposals into 29 plus programs. Such programs include Ecosystem Science, Soil and Soil Biology, Plant Responses to the Environment, Entomology and Nematology, Biologically Based Pest Management, Plant Genome, Plant Growth and Development, and Markets and Trade. We encourage both applied and basic research as well as individual and multidisciplinary research. In addition, there are special funds set aside for new investigators, postdoctorates, EPSCoR states, and small and mid-sized institutions for promising scientists. These, as well as our standard, seed, equipment, sabbatical, and conference proposals will be discussed. The NRI application, review, and award processes, as well as successful approaches to proposal writing will be covered. Detailed information, including our application and requests for proposals (program descriptions), can be found at our web site (www.reeusda.gov/nri). Come prepared with questions!
