Reported, are the preliminary results of a study assessing the effects of standard management practices (fire, grazing, haying, and no-management) on ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) of tallgrass prairie remnants located in Northwestern Minnesota. In 1995, transects were established on the Bluestem Prairie Complex, Bicentennial and Blazing Star Prairie Complexes, Clay County Trust Lands, and on Agassiz Dunes State Natural Area. Sampling protocols have generated collections which are being used to assess management effects by looking at habitat distribution (dry, mesic, wet, and sand prairie), seasonal abundance, and seasonal cycling of select carabid species. To date, approximately 70 species of ground beetles have been recorded from the prairie study sites. Initial conclusions of analyses conducted on select carabid species will be presented.
