Prairie remnants associated with railroad right-of-ways were surveyed in western Wisconsin with an emphasis on grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae). Prairie remnants at 5 different railroad sections were surveyed using a sweep net and individual collection. Grasshopper species abundance and diversity were assessed at each remnant and thus scored for relative prairie quality. Species complexes collected at these sites were evaluated in comparison to larger intensively managed prairie remnants and reconstructions.
