Linnaean Games at the 1999 North Central Branch Meeting

The Linnaean Games are a great way for students to compete in a friendly atmosphere with teams from other Entomology Departments in the Branch. Teams of four students compete in the Linnaean Games, which are a quiz-bowl format competition dealing with entomological facts, history, and a little "trivia". Questions come from all members of the branch, and teams may send questions at any time, but they may or may not hear them in their match at the Games. The Games were featured in an article in the Bulletin of the ESA (Vol. 31 (3), Fall 1985) by Turpin and Edwards and the rules of the competition are available in that article.

Remember that winning is only part of the fun, and that the visibility that students get as Linnaean team members is a positive way to participate in your Branch. The winning team and runners-up of the Branch Games are eligible to represent the North Central Branch at the National Linnaean Games in Atlanta, GA next December. Eligibility is the same as for Branch Student Awards, so get a team together to represent your department!

Due to time constraints at the meeting, we are limiting competition to the first 10 teams that submit a list of participants: multiple teams will be allowed only if space permits.

Teams are expected to find faculty willing to serve as judges for one of the two sessions, and may submit questions for the 1999 Games prior to March 1, 1999.

For more information, contact Barb Nead-Nylander. Barb will not be at the games but Mike Cuny will be the Gamesmaster and will handle any last minute set-up issues.

Update! We have 8 teams participating:

  • Nebraska
  • Iowa-2 Teams
  • Kansas -2 Teams
  • Missouri
  • North Dakota
