The American Burying Beetle

The American Burying Beetle, Nicrophorus americanus, has disappeared from most of its range, which once covered almost all of the eastern United States. It is now known only from small populations in South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Rhode Island. Reasons for this disappearance are unknown but probably relate to loss of habitat.
