Insects in Scientific Studies |
BiomimeticsInsects have been widely used in a field of science called biomimetics. Biomimetics refers to the reproduction of biological designs in human-engineered things. One common example of such a technology is velcro. Note that the invention of velcro was inspired not by an insect but by a plant. Read the overview at the Biomimetic Robots site. Click on the Hexapedal Robots button to view robots that mimic insects.
Some of these biomimetics projects at the University of Bath are focusing on insects. Here are some pictures of biomimetic robots. Insect eyes have been used as the technological basis for ultra-thin cameras. Some think that biomimetics can go too far (you'll need to install QuickTime to see this movie). What is your favorite use or future use of biomimetics? Post about it on your Learning Journal. Updated 2007-10-02 21:33
