Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a web-only course or a classroom course?

Both! In the spring it is taught by Dr. Ken Holscher and meets in a classroom. During the fall, it is taught over the web by Dr. Mark Shour.

I just go at my own pace, right?

Yes and no. We have an assessment every Friday. The dates for all assessments can be found in the syllabus. So you can go at your own pace throughout the week as long as you're ready for the exam on Friday. Please don't leave everything for Thursday night! The advice of former students in this class is pace yourself. Plus, if you don't leave everything until the last minute you get the benefit of feedback from the instructor and other students.

What time on Friday is the quiz/exam?

The quiz/exam is available all day Friday. You can take it at 3 am Friday morning if you are an early riser. Of course, your proctor must be an early riser too, then.

I forgot to take the exam on Friday. Can I take it now?

No. As in other courses, you need to write down when your exams are and take them at the specified time.

May I use my book, notes, the web, learning journals, or other materials during my exam?

No. We have exams to give you an opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned in the class. Using such materials during an exam is considered academic misconduct.

What will happen if I use my book, notes, the web, or other materials during my exam?

The same thing that would happen if you used a cheatsheet on an exam in a regular course. Details are here. Please don't.

I signed up for this course but didn't get around to starting until now. I notice the rest of the class is already on the third week of the course. How do I catch up?

You will have to drop the course.

What will happen if I sign up for this course, but never contact the instructor or log in?

The same thing that would happen if you signed up for a regular course and never came to class. Hint: it won't help your GPA.

I didn't get your e-mail message because I use a Hotmail account...I never check my Iowa State University account.

That's quite a bit like saying you didn't pay your tuition bill because it was sent to a mailbox that you never check. If you choose to use a third-party e-mail account such as Hotmail, it is your responsibility to have your Iowa State e-mail forwarded to that account. The entire process takes about a minute and can be done over the web right here. All email correspondence for this course will be sent to your ISU email address.

When are the web assignments due?

Web assignments are exercises that help you learn more about the subject we are considering in class. Exams are taken each Friday. So it makes sense that you need to have the assignments done before then so you will know the subject before you are evaluated on your knowledge. In fact, you will probably want to get them done early in the week so you have the latter part of the week for review.

I did not have time to keep up with my Learning Journal during the course, but I completed them all today [the day final projects are due]. Do I get credit?

First, this course is not about "getting credit". It is about learning. Your learning journal is there to help you learn. See When are the web assignments due? above. If you have not yet completed your assignments in a timely manner, then when journal is reviewed by your peers they will probably take that into account.
