Bioindicators

A bioindicator is an organism that is used as an indicator of the quality of an ecosystem.

Think of a stream that has a high oxygen level and an abundance of different aquatic organisms. What will happen when a factory is located upstream and pollution from heavy metals enters the stream?

By measuring the abundance of certain organisms, such as aquatic insects, we can get an indirect measure of the health of the environment.
