All living organisms are placed into certain groups or categories for understanding their relationship to each other. The system of hierarchical classification, in which each higher category encompasses all of the lower categories, was proposed initially by Carl Linnaeus in the mid-eighteenth century. The hierarchical system of organizing all organisms includes seven major categories or taxons, which are organized in the following sequence (humans are classified in this system as an example):
