Taxonomy

All living organisms are placed into certain groups or categories for understanding their relationship to each other. The system of hierarchical classification, in which each higher category encompasses all of the lower categories, was proposed initially by Carl Linnaeus in the mid-eighteenth century. The hierarchical system of organizing all organisms includes seven major categories or taxons, which are organized in the following sequence (humans are classified in this system as an example):

Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species/Specific Epithet
Animalia
Chordata
Mammalia
Primates
Hominidae
Homo
sapiens
