Class Chilopoda

The class Chilopoda consists of the centipedes. Centipedes have a head which bears eyes, mouthparts, and one pair of antennae. The remainder of the body is a flattened, segmented trunk with each segment bearing one pair of legs. Legs of the first body segment are modified into poisonous claws. These claws assist the predacious centipedes capture prey and are also used for protection and defense. Centipedes are usually nocturnal --which means they are active at night. The diet of centipedes generally consists of other arthropods or worms. The house centipede inhabits buildings where it preys upon insects and other arthropods. This beneficial activity is rarely appreciated by a homeowner who discovers these fast moving creatures in the bathroom or kitchen.
