The distortion is caused by the aphids feeding within the distorted area. When pealed back, there can be aphids crawling everywhere.

When you get really close to this species they will wave their abdomens in a jerking, eliptical motion.

Hyalomyzus monardae

This is another species of aphid, we think Hyalomyzus monardae Davis. It is found on curled leaves of monardae, unlike Aphis monardae that tends to be found on uncurled leaves, stems and flowers of monardae.
